The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic continues to impact the world in many ways from sports and entertainment cancellations to restaurants and other businesses changing how they operate with their hours and operations. States such as New York and California also want their residents to social distance by staying at home and leaving only for essential needs and for some exercise.

Tekashi 6ix9ine is set to be released from prison on August 2 but wants to get out much sooner due to the pandemic, according to The Daily Beast. He’s incarcerated in his home state of New York and cites his asthma problems as making him at a high-risk for the virus as well. His attorney, Lance Lazzaro sent a sent a letter to Manhattan federal Judge Paul Engelmayer explaining how the Brooklyn rapper has experienced shortness of breath. This is one of the symptoms of the virus.

“While I recognize that his release date is only about four months away, given the health crisis that is currently tearing through this region and Mr. Hernandez’s compromised medical condition, please strongly consider modifying Mr. Hernandez’s sentence so as to immediately make him eligible for home confinement,” said Lazzaro.

Lazzaro also claimed that 6ix9ine has had to go to the hospital regularly due to his asthma and bronchitis and sinusitis pain from October 31 of last year. 6ix9ine has also supposedly not been allowed to go to the hospital due to these issues lately. One celebrity in prison that has since contracted the virus is Harvey Weinstein.

“It seems like just a matter of time before all prisons in the area are hit with this virus, both inmates and guards,” Lazzaro said. “Mr. Hernandez has been complaining to prison officials this week of shortness of breath, but apparently the warden of his facility will not allow Mr. Hernandez to go to the hospital despite the recommendation of the facility’s medical director that Mr. Hernandez is treated by a doctor at a hospital.” Should 6ix9ine be infected with the virus, Lazzaro says that he’d be “at a very high risk of death or serious complications.”

6ix9ine was originally hit with a two-year sentence in December due to racketeering charges along with his crimes committed with the Nine Trey Bloods. He tried to snitch on them in September but it didn’t work in court at all. Despite the two-year sentence, he was given credit for time served. He was originally taken into custody in November of 2018.
