Akon has been under the radar as one of the most impactful people in the world over the past decade. In 2014, he started his “Akon Lighting Africa” initiative where solar street lights and energy systems were installed all over his home continent of Africa. He was able to receive a $1 billion credit line from Chinese manufacturers to put these moves into place.
Akon has worked directly in Guinea, Senegal, Mali, Niger, Benin, and Sierra Leone. Now, the music icon has announced even more big news in Africa on Instagram as he now as a city in Senegal named after himself with “Akon City.” He posted a photo with government officials as he said she agreement for the city is finalized. This took place in the country’s capital of Dakar.
Akon is sure to continue to bring more positive change in Africa. He’s been investing his money to give back to numerous communities and it’ll be interesting to see what he accomplishes in Akon City.
