Instagram To Begin Testing Hiding “Likes” Next Week; Will Start In Canada

It’s been rumored that Instagram will start hiding the amount of likes that posts get so the public can fully enjoy the app and that’s what’s going to happen. At Facebook’s “F8 Conference” today, an IG spokesperson said that the test for hiding likes will begin next week and that goal looks like it’ll be a reality.

“We are testing this because we want your followers to focus on the photos and videos you share, not how many likes they get,” said the Instagram spokesperson to Techcrunch. “We understand that this is important for many creators, and while this test is in exploratory stages, we are thinking through ways for them to communicate value to their brand partners. Those who are still addicted to their “likes” numbers need not worry; hiding the amount of “likes”won’t affect the algorithm.”

Despite the algorithm not being affected, the likes won’t be seen and IG models and influences could still be panicking. The testing will first begin in Canada. The IG spokesperson said that Canadians are highly social and tech-savvy with 24 million people connecting with their family of apps each month.

Among other features on the way are a “nudge” feature to sense if inappropriate comments are about to be made in attempt to prevent bullying and an “away mode” which helps IG users take a break in the situation that they’re going through difficult times. It’s going to be interesting to see if IG models, curators, and “influencers” are affected by this change. Gear up for a crazy time on IG next week.
