Another day, another article praising Kim Kardashian West for doing something that black women have BEEN doing.
Vogue Runway tweeted a picture of Kim with a kanekalon ponytail attached to an article titled ‘Kim Kardashian West is Bringing Crimped Hair Back in a Big Way.’
Every black woman who read that title, is highly confused. Kim literally has, what looks like, a kanekalon ponytail in her hair. If you don’t know what kanekalon hair is, it’s a type of synthetic hair that black women have been using for decades. You can usually get a pack of kanekalon hair at your local beauty supply store for around $1.99-$2.99 a pack. Black women typically use the hair for braiding, but it can be worn as a ponytail as well. The hair can typically not be curled or heated.
Now that we’ve got the background information out the way, Kim slapping that kanekalon ponytail on is not the problem. The problem is when publications like Vogue, praise Kim for doing something that black women have been doing. Kim did not bring “crimped” hair back in no type of way. Let’s not forget Beyoncé recently toured the world on her On The Run 2 Tour with her “crimped” hair. Janet Jackson went on tour with “crimped” ponytail hair last year, but Kim is the one who is making the hair stylish again?
Please stop taking things from black women without giving us our credit!
