Hip Hop Songs with the Theme of Education

We can sometimes fall into the trap of thinking that hip hop songs mostly follow the same kinds of themes. The themes of money and fame can be rampant in these songs, but they’re not the only themes that you’ll find. In this article, we’ll be looking at the songs out there that are all about education…

Get Educated – Akala

Akala is no stranger to the theme of using education as a means of empowerment, as this is common in his discography. There are also a number of interviews in which he stated that education is the way that those from dysfunctional homes can improve themselves. It’s actually a great song to listen to while you are studying or learning, as the lyrics are quite motivational.

I Can – Nas

All too often, hip hop songs can be guilty of advising that those with talent to drop out of school and follow their dreams. This song by Nas offers a different perspective with some great lyrics to carry it across. This ditches the idea that you don’t need an education, without getting too preachy or on a soapbox.

Brain Damage – Eminem

Eminem raps a lot about his early life and family on a number of his albums. Brain Damage takes him back to the school days and tells the story of a bully that gets on his case. In typical Eminem style, there’s a lot of humour within the lyrics, making this one of the most unique educational rap songs on our list. As you would expect from the Rap God artist, the rapping in this song is very technically proficient and fast paced.

Hey Young World – Slick Rick

This song offers a really good example of late 80s rap that has a bit of a fun message. It’s got a message that encourages listeners to stay in school but without being too cheesy. With such a subject, it can be easy for artists to go too far in one direction and come off as authoritarian. Slick Rick is not guilty of that at all and you’ll find it gets stuck in your head from the very first listen.

College Boy – J Cole

In this song, J Cole encourages his listeners to get a higher education and head to college. This is about proving yourself to your friends and family and showing what you’re worth. Plus it’s quite fun to listen to, so you won’t tire of it.

These songs are all ideal for that next study session and serve as a bit of a parallel to all the songs that are more focused towards succeeding without an education. Stick in school and enjoy all of these songs for some great rap.
