It is impossible to not feel bad for Andre Lyon (Trai Byers), as his lovely, scheming, wife, Rhonda (Kaitlin Doubleday) is dead. During the season two finale, Rhonda and Anika (Grace Gealey) fought on the balcony. Ultimately, Rhonda fell to her death, shattering Andre’s life.
Andre went from expecting to have a baby, to almost losing both his wife and his child. Now, his wife is gone, as is his faith in the religion he had given his life to. All over Twitter, “Poor Andre” is trending, along with “Not Rhonda.”
Ilene Chaiken, the showrunner for “Empire,” discussed why Rhonda was killed off, saying one of the two ladies had to die to serve story. She would also say they hadn’t decided who would die, as of the season finale. Chaiken discussed that, along with Anika being married to Lucious (Terrence Howard), with Leah (Leslie Uggams) living with them, and Cookie (Taraji P. Henson).
