Hip hop is so widespread that there is a lot to cover, but it seems that the leaders in coverage are not from the culture. It was not always this way, as Ralph McDaniels took it upon himself to document the culture. He did this with “Video Music Box,” helping open doors for many emcees.

Working on the visual side, Ralph McDaniels did music videos for the likes of Nas and Raekwon, among others. They have continued working with him over the years. Last year, Nas worked with Ralph McDaniels on his Time Is Illmatic documentary.

During the Latin Quarter Day Party, Ralph McDaniels spoke to Hip Hop Vibe about the “Video Music Box” 30th anniversary and his role in hip hop history. Ralph McDaniels discussed the evolution of hip hop, saying he supports all genres of hip hop, but he likes the lyricism of the likes of J. Cole, Drake, and Kendrick Lamar. He went onto discuss working with Nas on his documentary and Raekwon on his upcoming documentary.
