In the late 1990s, Fabolous was at every hip hop event trying to get his foot in the door. But, his big break came when he ended up on Hot 97, freestyling on DJ Clue’s show. He freestyled against N.O.R.E. and the world took to him.
By 2001, Fabolous became an immediate hip hop superstar who was often compared to Jay-Z. He scored many hits with Lil’ Mo and Mike Shorey early in his career. Recent years have seen Fabolous move on, focusing on his own crew.
Fabolous recently appeared on MTV News and he talked to Rob Markman about the early days of his rap career. In the interview, Fabolous gave the backstory on the infamous freestyle that went down with DJ Clue and N.O.R.E. It turns out, Fabolous never knew that his freestyle would air on Hot 97 and he didn’t event want to do it, because he wrote the freestyle earlier that day.
