HHV Exclusive: Big Sean talks “IDFWU” success, new album, Lil Wayne, Kanye West, Jay-Z, and Adidas

Big Sean 23

Three years ago, Big Sean finally claimed his position as a star in the game. He did it on a mainstream level. However, many have hoped he would return to the form he had during his mixtape years and 2011 run. Every time he talks, Big Sean talks about how much he has stepped things up.

Big Sean recently released four new songs and it was a surprise he did this. These songs were released in conjunction with him signing with Roc Nation’s management. Last week, the Detroit emcee revealed he was working on a new album, which should come sometime before the end of the year.

Hip Hop Vibe had the opportunity to hear from Big Sean. HHV was on the Def Jam conference call. There, he discussed several things. Currently, Big Sean is owning the game with his “I Don’t F With You,” with E-40. He also gave some details about his new album, just not the title, spoke on working with Lil Wayne and being mentored by Kanye West and Jay-Z.

Read Big Sean’s talking points below:

On “I Don’t F With You:”

We’ve been working really hard and I know I’m nothing without the people who support me. My homie emailed me and he said “I guess this is where it all begins” and I said “I guess so.” With everybody breaking up right now, I’m like “WOW,” so I just dropped this record, but it’s not even a breakup song. I was thinking when I wrote this song that it can be sang anywhere and I’m loving to see the people in the clubs loving this song. This song can be sang in the clubs, in the shower, in the kitchen, anywhere. I am glad the people are getting behind this record, even though I have a tonload more in the works.

On dropping four songs at the same time:

I wanted to put four songs out and I talked to my mom beforehand and she said that people would get confused with me dropping so many songs at once. But, the game has changed now and we’re on different vibes. It’s the same me, but each songis different and they all serve different purposes, but this is just the preview of what we have going on. It’s cool to be a part of hip hop and to be here with Kendrick, Cole, and Drake, but I’m going for blood right now. These singles all fit different themes and situations right now.

On new album:

We put our blood, sweat, and tears into this. I’m not announcing the albums and release dates yet, because I want everything to be done a certain way. Thanks to all for their support and the music videos for the four singles to come in the near future. We put so much time and energy into making this album the best one of the year. This will be one of my most-intense albums ever, darker, high-level tones, and so much more. We’re excited about it over here and we’re making sure everyone is involved, Def Jam, G.O.O.D. Music, and Roc Nation.

Working with Lil Wayne:

I did a verse with Wayne almost a year ago, it may be on Carter V, but I’m not trying to spoil his stuff, so I’m not sure what’s going to happen.

On being mentored by Kanye West and Jay-Z:

‘Ye was the first one to say “Sean is going to be the best one day.” He said it in front of Jay-Z and he was like “yeah.” That means a lot, because Kanye West and Jay-Z, as well as Eminem are the best artists, so yeah, I’m the best and I don’t say that to be cocky. I say this because I’m trying to be the best at what I do and I’m going for the spot, even against my own team. I was just telling Kendrick this. It feels great to be a contender and a new guy putting numbers on the board.

On Adidas sneakers:

This is my third time working with Adidas and this was a big deal. The shoes sold out and now there are only a few sizes left. I dropped the shoes the same day I dropped the songs, so it’s amazing to be a global ambassador for them. They’ve been dope since Run-DMC endorsed them back in the day.
