The past few years have seen mixtapes take precedence over albums, as this is how many people hear of artists for the first time. In the case of North Carolina, the hip hop scene hadn’t had much success since Petey Pablo until J. Cole emerged. Though J. Cole had some success, The Warm Up was his breakthrough.

Earlier in the year, J. Cole made a power move when Jay-Z signed him as the first artist to the Roc Nation label. This helped bring the spotlight back here to North Carolina and show what the artists are about. Before 2009 ended, “Lights Please” emerged as one of the hottest songs on the radio.

It’s been five years since J. Cole released The Warm Up, which is critically-acclaimed and he is sitting down with Sway for it. They are recapping the five years that have passed since the project dropped. J. Cole also premiered the “Lights Please” music video some five years later.
