HueyBy DJ Louie Styles
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

Hip hop is everywhere and all it takes is the right person to keep pushing to make something happen in their city. St. Louis had this happen and they had a run that lasted for the better part of ten years. In the middle of this run, Huey emerged and he had everybody doing the G5.

Huey emerged in 2007 and he had the “Pop, Lock, and Drop It” single, which was followed by his Notebook Paper debut album. Since then, Huey dropped another album, Redemption, and now he is hitting the mixtape scene hard. Getting that work in, Huey has another new project in the works.

This afternoon, Huey took some time out to speak with Hip Hop Vibe about his upcoming work. The new project from Huey is called Project H, which is coming soon. Recently, Huey dropped the “Turn Up” video and he spoke to us about joining Brick Squad Monopoly.

Read the entire interview below:

Back in 2013, you announced you signed with Waka Flocka Flame, can you tell us how that came together? My road manager been rocking with Flocka for a while and he kind of put that situation together.

You are working on some new music and Waka Flocka will likely be on the project, who else will be featured on the record? With this project, I kind of wanted to give the fans and supporters me. I didn’t want to give a heavy feature type of project. But, I got some records in the cut for the next one.

The St. Louis hip hop scene is putting in work right now, with you pushing forward and Tiffany Foxx doing her thing, how do you feel about her music? Tiffany go hard. I been peeping her work ethic and listening to her for a while. So, I salute where she is and where she is going. Hopefully we make something crazy for the city real soon.

Recently, you dropped the “Turn Up” visuals, what do you see for this single in the future? I plan on pushing this joint as far as we can and making some real noise. I’m so focused at this point in my career and grateful for the team I have, so we on a mission, TURN U.

When artists come out with such a huge record, they find it hard to back up, do you ever look back on your career and wonder how things could have been different? It’s funny you ask, because I used to do it a lot. But nah, not really anymore. Everything happens for a reason and it made me so much stronger. So now all I do is focus on doing it bigger.

During that era, you had the chance to work with many big stars, who were some of your favorites to be around on a personal level? One of the artist I was around the most were label mates like K. Michelle and T-Pain. They are cool people and every time we see each other, it’s love. K was just in St. Louis and showed love. So, I’m proud of the homegirl.

Have you been in contact with any of those figures, as you’re working on your new record? Not really on this project. I had to show the world Huey and give them me. But, those relationships are still in place, so you will hear great music.

Currently, you don’t have a title for your new record, but do you have ANY that you are considering? Well, the new project is Project H. That’s the title. If you mean an album, I don’t even want to get ahead of myself and just to that point. I’m going to just kill the streets with quality music and make em remember what I can do, but show them what I will do! Ya know.

When should the people expect you to come back with something new? Expect it now. No more waiting or none of the stalling. My team is just as ready and hungry as me so its go time.
