Hip hop has gone through many transitions since it’s inception forty or thirty-nine years ago, depending on who tells the story. Somebody like Meek Mill is someone older hip hop fans would probably say does’t make “real” music. But, he has continued one tradition of hip hop, rocking the chains.
Gold chains have existed as long as hip hop has, but they played out in the 1990s and early 2000s in favor of platinum chains. Guys like Jay-Z, The Hot Boyz, Ja Rule, and others helped cause that shift. LL Cool J even rapped about this major change on his diss track, “Back Where I Belong,” aimed at Canibus.
The past couple of years have seen a resurgence in gold chains and Meek Mill should receive some credit for that. His Dreamchasers chains have a thick gold rope, but has diamonds encrusted in it. Meek Mill showed the chain off on Instagram, but also let fans catch a peek of his gold watches.
