DJ YRS Jerzy’s Wednesday Throwback: A Tribute to Ol’ Dirty Bastard

ODBBy DJ YRS Jerzy
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

Recently, the Wu-Tang Clan celebrated their twentieth anniversary and it was the during the same timeframe of Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s birthday and death date. Hip Hop Vibe had plans of doing a tribute, of sorts, for the Wu-Tang Clan and their deceased legend. But, it had to be done right.

After a lot of debating and tossing of ideas, it was agreed upon that this week’s edition of the Wednesday Throwback would be dedicated to Ol’ Dirty Bastard. An integral member of the Wu-Tang Clan nine years after his death, Hip Hop Vibe will document his career and his music today. There is so much material to choose from.

Ol’ Dirty Bastard, ODB to all the underage viewers, died nine years ago, but he is still impacting the game. His impact is evident when looking at such guys as A$AP Ferg and his label-mate, A$AP Rocky. On his “Fuckin’ Problems” record, A$AP Rocky even sampled “Shimmy Shimmy Ya.”

Not only does his legions of fans, and crew-mates miss Ol’ Dirty Bastard and his unique views on music, but his family also misses him. By default, no other rapper in the game is more influenced by ODB than his son, Young Dirty Bastard, once again for all the underage viewers, UDB. Ol’ Dirty put in thirteen years in the game, lived to appear on four Wu-Tang Clan albums, put out two of his own, with a third planned, and appeared on a host of records from other artists.

November 13, 2004 remains a day when hearts are heavy for ODB, rest in peace to the legend, Russell Tyrone Jones.
