For artists breaking into the game, they can look no further than Yo Gotti when it comes to finding success without support. There’s a chance Yo Gotti may have wanted a record deal when he started, but he found success without one. After each record deal went bad for various reasons, Yo Gotti took to mixtapes to build his buzz.

Yo Gotti released several mixtapes that built his popularity and it led to him being booked for shows all around the world. In 2011, Yo Gotti’s popularity peaked and he ended up signing with RCA Records and releasing Live From The Kitchen in 2012. He bought himself out of the RCA deal and then signed with L.A. Reid and Epic Records.

Next week, Yo Gotti is releasing his major label sophomore album, I Am. Going into this album, he has a major hit with “Act Right,” featuring Young Jeezy and YG. The record is huge and Yo Gotti took time out to speak to Forbes about his journey to this position.
