Several artists get a lot of attention and acclaim for their longevity, yet none of them have lasted as long as Too $hort. Ever since the early 1980s, Too $hort has dropped classic records. Known for making the nasty tracks, Too $hort also rapped about the injustices of the ghetto.
Too $hort emerged in the 1980s and ended up retiring in 1996 (yeah, seven years before Jay-Z and during the same year he debuted). But, long before the Los Angeles hip hop scene broke through with Ice-T, NWA, and the others, Too $hort was there. He was one of the first artists to work outside of his geographic region.
Under his belt, Too $hort has dropped twenty-one solo albums and he even dropped a double album, History, with E-40. Too $hort has collaborated with such names as Jay-Z, Lil Jon, Keith Murray, Lil’ Kim, Dr. Dre, Mistah F.A.B., Diddy, 50 Cent, Twista, and Snoop Dogg, among more. He is one of the most-underrated legends.
Too $hort is best-known for his singles, “The Ghetto” and “Blow The Whistle,” but there is much more to the man. Through the efforts of Too $hort, Oakland hip hop managed to break into the mainstream and he continues to keep the scene going. In actuality, the Oakland hip hop scene pre-dates a lot of other scenes that have had success. Continuing the trend of Oakland Week here on Hip Hop Vibe, today marks “The Best of Too $hort.”
