GTA Stories, Ten Notable “Grand Theft Auto” Characters: Carl “CJ” Johnson

Seems like something was absent from Hip Hop Vibe last night. That’s no problem, but tonight there’s a double up. Grand Theft Auto is more than just a video game, it has become a lifestyle for millions of people and the impending release of Grand Theft Auto V is probably a reason Drake pushed Nothing Was The Same back for a week.

Grand Theft Auto V drops in six days and the days leading up to the release have been dedicated to characters in the series on Hip Hop Vibe. Vice City‘s Tommy Vercetti was featured in the last edition and tonight it’s Carl “CJ” Johnson. Ironically, gamers argue all day about which of these two characters are the best in GTA history.

At the time, Carl “CJ” Johnson’s character took on the biggest game, literally, in the history of Grand Theft Auto. He completed impossible missions, avenged the death of his mother, and went from being a street thug to being a mogul. The character of CJ is also given credit for being the first black character to get the lead role.

Legendary West Coast rapper, Young Maylay, voiced the role of CJ and he talked to Hip Hop Vibe about both Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Grand Theft Auto V. For more on Young Maylay’s conversation with Hip Hop Vibe, click here.

Read excerpts from Young Maylay’s interview with Hip Hop Vibe below:

With Grand Theft Auto V revisiting Los Santos, should fans expect you to reprise your role as ‘CJ?’ Not as far as I know, I have nothing to do with this game.

Are you even keeping up with the Grand Theft Auto scene anymore? Yeah. I am a fan of the game, I really played those things. I own San AndreasVice City, I do not own GTA IV, but I will own GTA V when it comes out.
