Though it is hard to imagine now, Tyler, the Creator once was a bigger artist than his fellow Los Angeles emcee, Kendrick Lamar. However, the difference was made in 2012 when Kendrick Lamar released good kid, m.A.A.d. city. Just because Tyler, the Creator did not release a new album does not mean he did not impact 2012.

While Frank Ocean is signed to Def Jam and works with Jay-Z and Kanye West, he is a member of Tyler, the Creator’s Odd Future. Not many people realize Frank Ocean is a member of Tyler’s misfit camp. Due to Tyler, the Creator’s consistent use of the word “faggot,” many felt this would cause problems with Frank Ocean.

Tyler, the Creator and Frank Ocean have remained close and Tyler continues to excessively use “faggot” in his vocabulary. Read an excerpt of Tyler, the Creator’s interview with Rolling Stone below:

Did you know Frank Ocean was gay before he came out last year?
Yeah, I was one of the first people he told. I kinda knew, because he likes Pop Tarts without frosting on them, so I knew something was weird. [Laughs] But that’s my nigga.

Do you think he cares about you using the word “faggot”?
He knows me, and he knows I don’t care about being gay. It’s just another word to me. The same as “nigga.” Let’s say Frank started using the word “fag,” just jokingly. People would be so fucking confused! They wouldn’t know what to do. And it could take the power out of that word.
