Overlooked and Underrated: Cam’ron

Cam'ron 2By Hardcore Critic
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

Yesterday, The Diplomats celebrated the tenth anniversary of their album, Diplomatic Immunity, and it has been business as usual since then. In recent years, Cam’ron has been a background player in hip hop. From 2007 to 2009, Cam’ron disappeared, which led to the “where’s Cam’ron?” campaign.

Considered a legend in Harlem, the mainstream hip hop world had forgotten all about Cam’ron and his Dipset movement. Now, the focus is on A$AP Rocky and the A$AP Mob, but Cam’ron has the legacy the hip hop world has glossed over. Convinced to rap by Big L, Cam’ron caught the attention of some of the biggest rappers in the game, including The Notorious B.I.G.

Boasting a friendship with Damon Dash, Cam’ron came in right on time. At the height of Jay-Z’s feud with Nas, Cam’ron joined the team and became a major ally. Using the Roc-A-Fella platform, Cam’ron emerged as one of the biggest mainstream rappers in the game during the summer of 2002.

While not on the level of many of the other rapper/moguls, Cam’ron has a strong business record in front of him. Had it not been for the efforts of Cam’ron, there would be no Jim Jones, Juelz Santana, Freekey Zekey, or Vado. Cam’ron still does not receive the same type of credit hip hop gave to Jay-Z before he branched outside of music. In business, Cam’ron does not receive the proper credit, nor does he receive it for his lyrics when he is among the most-gifted to ever hit the same.
