“When I say a B.I.G. verse, I’m biggin’ up my brother, I’m biggin’ up my borough, I’m big enough to do it,” Jay-Z exclaimed on “What More Can I Say.” At the time of his 2003 retirement, Jay-Z came under fire for frequently sampling The Notorious B.I.G.’s lyrics. As fate would have it, 2003 was not the end and Jay-Z had much more in store.
In 2009, Jay-Z returned from his two-year hiatus with The Blueprint 3. A critically-acclaimed album, Jay-Z started the album off with a bang. T-Pain took auto-tune to new heights and the entire rap game adopted it, which inspired Jay-Z’s “D.O.A. (Death of Auto-tune” single.
Taking aim at the auto-tune rappers, it would not be a Jay-Z single without paying homage to The Notorious B.I.G. On “D.O.A.,” Jay-Z quoted The Notorious B.I.G. from his eerie, “You’re Nobody (‘Til Somebody Kills You).” With his B.I.G.’s quote in tow, Jay-Z caused an effective end to the auto-tune era.
