The other name, aside from Russell Simmons and Kevin Liles, who helped build Def Jam was Lyor Cohen, who gave chances to the likes of Jay-Z and Irv Gotti. Those decisions would help to rebuild Def Jam in the 1990s, with artists such as Beanie Sigel, DMX, Ja Rule, and Ashanti producing hits under this union. In 2004, Def Jam underwent an overhaul and Lyor Cohen left.

Along with Kevin Liles, Lyor Cohen reappeared at Warner Music Group. Lyor Cohen would take over the helm of Warner Music Group, brokering deals with the likes of T.I., Wiz Khalifa, Curren$y, and Rick Ross. Lyor Cohen’s overall record is quite impressive, but it appears as if he is taking an indefinite break.

Earlier today, Lyor Cohen revealed he would be stepping down from his role at Warner. Cohen will effectively leave his position on September 30. Lyor Cohen offered a thanks to those who have supported him over the years. Stephen Cooper will take over the role Lyor Cohen held until an official replacement is found.
