Welcome to Charlotte: An Introduction to the Charlotte hip hop scene

In the eyes of many, the hip hop mecca of the South is Atlanta. Over the past fifteen years, Atlanta has introduced some of hip hop’s most talented artists. However, a three hour trip on I-85 North will introduce another vibrant Southern city full of hip hop talent. Welcome to Charlotte, North Carolina.

The Queen City is quickly developing its own urban scene, though Charlotte lacks a consistent winning basketball team, or a filmmaker such as Tyler Perry. There are a number of talented hip hop figures on the Charlotte hip hop scene. Currently, a number of local rappers, DJs, and producers are on the verge of stardom.

While Charlotte is full of hip hop talent and is home of the annual CIAA tournament, which brings many of hip hop’s elite, the city is still overlooked. The Charlotte hip hop scene currently lacks the one mainstream rap artist to introduce the entire city. With both rappers and DJs, there are a number of people who will bring Charlotte to the forefront.

Over the past year, areas such as Chicago, Philadelphia, New York City, and Los Angeles have enjoyed strong resurgences in hip hop, meanwhile newer hip hop scenes, such as Toronto, have been introduced. Definitely among the next few cities to emerge triumphant in the hip hop world is Charlotte, as the hip hop residents include such DJs as DJ Ben Frank and DJ YRS Jerzy. Among the many talented rappers from the area are P.O. and Carlimo Da Don.

Welcome to Charlotte.
