Lupe Fiasco talks “Around My Way (Freedom Ain’t Free)” and Pete Rock sample

Yesterday, Lupe Fiasco released the first single from his long-awaited album, Food & Liquor II: The Great American Rap Album. The name of the single is “Around My Way (Freedom Ain’t Free).” Already, the song has been met with critical praise and samples Pete Rock’s “T.R.O.Y.”

One person unimpressed with the sample is Pete Rock. Last night, the legendary entertainer voiced his opinion on Twitter. Calling out both Lupe Fiasco and the producer of the song, Pete Rock called the song “wack.” Pete Rock has yet to receive a response from Lupe Fiasco.

Before Pete Rock made his statement, Lupe Fiasco did discuss his new single in a conference call with Atlantic Records, moderated by DJ Whoo Kid. During the conference call, Lupe discussed his new album, saying it would feature no rap collaborations. Speaking on his single, Lupe Fiasco said the credit goes to his manager, who convinced him to go with that track.
