Following years of stagnation, the West Coast, specifically Los Angeles, is producing rap stars once again. One of the main labels releasing music from the new hip hop stars of Los Angeles is Top Dawg Entertainment. Boasting the likes of Jay Rock, who rose to fame in 2010 for calling Ice Cube out, and Kendrick Lamar, who rose to fame last summer, the label is behind many new talents.
The efforts of Kendrick Lamar in 2011 led to him sharing studio time with Dr. Dre, which led to him signing him to Aftermath Entertainment. Immediately an artist signed to Interscope Records, the label signed a deal for the entire Top Dawg roster, adding ScHoolboy Q and Ab-Soul to the label. Currently, ScHoolboy Q is on his way to becoming superstar, as is Ab-Soul.
LA Stereo recently spoke with Ab-Soul about the moves he is making with his career, speaking on his debut album, Control System, the Black Hippy movement, and the obstacles of his career.
