Even after all he has been through, there is one word most use to describe Damon Dash, genius. Many moguls have come before him, building large empires. However, few moguls had the drive and knowledge of Damon Dash. While Jay-Z is usually credited for the success of the Roc-A-Fella empire, much of their success goes to Damon Dash and his expertise in marketing.
Still, none of this was enough to stop the inevitable, as Damon Dash was kicked out of the empire, which was sold off to major corporations. Meanwhile, his own fortune dwindled and Dash was forced to reorganize. Determined as ever, Damon Dash returned with a new record label and a new focus. As he was rebuilding his empire, there were rumors of Damon Dash reuniting with Jay-Z to relaunch Roc-A-Fella Records and Curren$y was said to be the first artist.
Curren$y released two albums in 2010, the first two albums of the Pilot Talk series. As he works on Pilot Talk 3, which he is considering releasing for free, Curren$y filed a lawsuit against Damon Dash. After holding discussions with Dash, Curren$y eventually signed with Warner Bros. Records. Despite this, Dash still released two albums without his permission. With Curren$y’s side of the story displayed throughout the media, Damon Dash’s camp has released an official statement.
Read the statement below:
“My client’s initial reaction to the lawsuit was that of surprise, particularly in light of Curren$y’s numerous statements that the ‘Muscle Car Chronicles’ would be released by BluRoc,†states Damon Dash’s attorney, Joshua E. Seidman.
“On March 15, 2012, the plaintiffs appeared in Federal Court to argue for a preliminary injunction seeking to enjoin my client from the continued distribution of the ‘Muscle Car Chronicles’.
The plaintiffs’ application was denied in open Court by Federal Judge Andrew Carter and the album was permitted to remain available through iTunes and other retailers. While the situation remains ongoing, we are hopeful that an amicable resolution can be reached.
My client wishes Curren$y the best in all of his future career endeavors. However, he has expressed a deep concern with respect to the manner in which the artist’s attorney and manager have conducted themselves. He sincerely hopes that Curren$y is not being misled or pressured into making unwise decisions, such as the filing of what appears to be a potentially frivolous litigation.”
