Once he finally released Cole World: The Sideline Story, J. Cole shot to fame. His album was met with strong critical reviews and was a commercial success. After all the delays, J. Cole proved he had what it took to be a star. J. Cole’s 2011 run was legendary, but it was not the first time a rapper from North Carolina enjoyed time in the spotlight. A decade prior, Petey Pablo experienced commercial success, but only enjoyed a brief run.

From the start, J. Cole was poised to be different, because he was signed to Jay-Z’s label. When he did release his album, J. Cole promised he would return with another album in 2012. However, aside from the recent release of his Missy Elliott-assisted “Nobody’s Perfect” single, J. Cole has been out of the public eye. J. Cole also had a standout collaboration with Melaine Fiona on her sophomore album, The MF Life.

Since J. Cole helped Fiona get over her sophomore jinx, she revealed her plans to help him do the same. Melanie Fiona is also signed to Roc Nation, however it is under management. The two collaborated on a song, likely a single, which will be released later this year. Fiona released a statement about their collaboration.

Read the statement from Melanie Fiona below:

“I did a track for him which will probably be on his new album… His song [has] a real positive message. It’s about a competition he was having with young girls and boys about keeping your head up and staying positive. I actually haven’t heard a final version of it yet. It felt good that he had reached out to me to be on a record like that, you know? I think that says a lot about how he sees me as an artist and that’s cool. That’s exactly how I want to be represented.”
