The last time Lil’ Kim released an album, it was in 2005. Lil’ Kim was once a mainstay at Atlantic Records, releasing an album every other year. Following the release of The Naked Truth, Lil’ Kim was sent to prison, which was one of the themes of the album. Even after being released from prison, Kim still stayed out of the spotlight.

In 2009, Lil’ Kim announced she was going to release a new album, Vintage. Fans were missing Lil’ Kim and female rappers, for the most part. While Lil’ Kim was trying to secure a label home and a release date, Queens femcee, Nicki Minaj, was rising from the mixtape scene to Young Money. The new Lil’ Kim album was not delivered as promised and Nicki Minaj shot to fame.

Lil’ Kim exchanged disses with Nicki Minaj for the next two years and did release a new project, which was inspired by the Nicki Minaj feud, Black Friday. The motives of the project may have been questionable, but fans and critics agreed Lil’ Kim had not lost a step, lyrically. Considering it her comeback effort, Lil’ Kim is preparing to release her first studio album in seven years.

Speaking with DJ Envy, with MTV Sucker Free, Lil’ Kim explained why she has not released an album in so long, blaming it on label issues.
