For longtime hip hop fans, it is hard to believe it has been fourteen years since DMX burst onto the scene with a string of hardcore hits. In an era of hip hop dominated by shiny suits and pop rappers, it was DMX who returned the hardcore element to hip hop. At a time when hip hop was still mourning the losses of Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G., DMX breathed new life into the game.

DMX’s run ended nearly a decade ago and hip hop again entered a phase where many were disappointed in the new direction. Following the years of lethargic raps, hip hop has returned to social conscious, with the emergence of J. Cole, the return of hardcore, with Meek Mill, and the return of energy, with Machine Gun Kelly.

Machine Gun Kelly, who was signed by Bad Boy Records last summer, has began making an impact on the game in recent months. During a recent interview, Machine Gun Kelly admitted he was heavily-inspired by DMX. DMX recently discussed both Machine Gun Kelly, who he has had the chance to meet, and J. Cole, who is currently backed by X’s rival, Jay-Z.

DMX recently spoke with Jon John TV about meeting Machine Gun Kelly and J. Cole.
