Among the many breakout artists of 2011, Mac Miller is probably the most-impressive. Even with all the outlets for independent artists, many still sign with a major record label before releasing their debut album. Mac Miller, who built an incredible buzz on the internet, had an opportunity to sign with a major, but decided to remain independent.

Without the support of a major label, Mac Miller’s Blue Slide Park debut album still debuted on top of the Billboard charts. Aside from the record sales, Mac Miller enjoyed a nice run in the headlines after Donald Trump commented on him. Trump called Miller “the next Eminem,” which was rebuffed by hip hop critics.

All of this went into consideration before Mac Miller was given the mtvU Woodie of the Year award. After his performance, where he announced the release date for his upcoming mixtape, the Pittsburgh sensation discussed his win with MTV News.
