Following the success of 2007’s Finding Forever, Common rushed back into the studio, wanting to work on something different. The final result was Universal Mind Control, an album widely considered one of the worst albums from Common. After the release of the album, Common’s focus changed from music to movies, as he was offered the lead role in Just Wright.

During this period of time, Common was also facing a crossroads, as he had left Geffen Records, his longtime label home. Common was deciding which label he was going to sign with, while he was still a member of the rising Kanye West-led label, G.O.O.D. Music. With everything going on, Common revealed he was not inspired to complete the album.

However, reuniting with No I.D., Common was soon inspired to put together a classic album for his fans, while going through an emotional low. Inspiration from No I.D., Common came out of his funk and delievered the listeners his latest stroy. The inspiration led to the success The Dreamer, The Believer has received since its release.
