Death Row Records is definitely one of the best record labels of all-time. Suge Knight was one of its co-founders and signed legends such as 2Pac, Dr. Dre, and Snoop Dogg. The label went bankrupt in 2006 and its music catalogue has changed ownership plenty of times since then. Now, it’s officially owned by popular toy company, Hasbro, according to Rolling Stone.
Hasbro is known for making iconic toys such as Mr. Potato Head, Power Rangers, My Little Pony, G.I. Joe, Transformers, and the board game, Monopoly. The catalogue was acquired after Hasbro bought Entertainment One, who owned rights to Death Row artists.’ music. eOne had bought the catalogue before back in 2013 for $280 million.
“The acquisition of eOne adds beloved story-led global family brands that deliver strong operating returns to Hasbro’s portfolio and provides a pipeline of new brand creation driven by family-oriented storytelling,” said Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner.
This is a very interesting move by Hasbro. What they would do with Death Row Records’ music catalogue is a head scratcher. Possibly using the artists’ music to put them inside of their own action figures of them could be an idea.
