Judge Brings Special Prosecutor to Investigate Why Jussie Smollett’s 16 Felony Counts of Filing a False Police Report After Staging Own Hate Crime Were Dropped; Smollet Could Still Be Prosecuted

Jussie Smollett was the talk of the world after he was supposedly attacked by two white supremacists in Chicago. Sadly, it turned out that Smollett hired actors to stage the attack. Now, Empire has no plans to bring him back on board despite his 16 felony counts of filing a false police report were dropped.

Smollett could still be prosecuted though for the false reports and lying about being the victim, according to TMZ. A Chicago judge is bringing on a special prosecutor to review how prosecutors handled this case along with the reasons for why the charges were dropped.

“If reasonable grounds exist to further prosecute Smollett, in the interest of justice the special prosecutor may take such action,” said the Judge. “Unprecedented irregularities identified in this case” warrants the appointment of a special prosecutor. Some of the irregularities.”

Office of State Attorney Kim Foxx was the one who originally dropped the charges. The judge in Chicago said the case was mishandled after Foxx recused herself due to making comments about the case. Foxx has since responded by saying “I respectfully disagree with the court’s conclusion that, in the absence of any conflict, the appointment of a special prosecutor is required.” Foxx added that she’s committed to “transparency, justice, and the public safety of the communities we serve.”

It’ll be interesting to see if Smollett does end up getting prosecuted again. The city of Chicago has also been trying to get paid by Smollett after the money they put into the case.
