It’s been a decade since YG signed with Def Jam. Out the gate, YG had a decent sized hit on his hands, with “Toot It and Boot It,” his first major single, with Ty Dolla $ign. The next five years were rough, as YG was relegated to being a mixtape rapper.

YG ended up linking with Def Jam label-mate, Young Jeezy, who helped him and DJ Mustard cultivate a new sound. The end result was 2013 hit, “My Hitta,” which carried over into 2014. In between that single’s runs came “Who Do You Love?,” featuring Drake.

Since then, YG has slowly faded from the spotlight, despite another major single, in “Big Bank,” featuring 2 Chainz, Big Sean, and Nicki Minaj. That success meant nothing when YG’s close friend, Nipsey Hussle was shot and killed, earlier this spring. Further honoring his legacy, YG made a big announcement.

Owing one more album to Def Jam, following the release of his upcoming album, on May 24, YG is going independent.
