Sunday evening (February 24th), Marvel StudiosBlack Panther took over the 2019 Oscars and made history by becoming the the first Marvel Studios film to ever win an Academy Award. In total, the superhero film earned seven nominations and brought home three Academy Awards for Best Costume Design (Ruth E. Carter), Best Production Design(Hannah Beachler), and Best Original Score(Ludwig Goransson) by the end of the night.

Ryan Coogler’s action-packed movie starring Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Angela Bassett, Lupita N’yongo and several others follows the Marvel character Black Panther ( T’Challa) as he aims to reclaim the futuristic African nation of Wakanda. Black Panther became the first superhero movie to be nominated for the Oscars’ Best Picture and although Marvel may not have landed the Oscars’ biggest prize, Black Panthers nomination alone gave Marvel the recognition it craved.

Regardless, the BP cast didn’t leave the award ceremony empty handed. Along with making Marvel history, Carter is the first black woman to ever win in the Costume Design category. So although a win in the top category didn’t happen, the billion-dollar blockbuster took three awards before the curtain closed on the award ceremony which is a major achievement for Marvel.
