In the early 2000s, Freeway rose to become one of the biggest names in the industry. A lot of this was due to having Jay-Z’s backing and being signed to Roc-A-Fella Records. Many overlook this, now, but the whole State Property movement was a big deal, back in the day.
Freeway had hits under his belt, but in 2008, he was forced to leave, after the official Roc-A-Fella breakup. This span of time saw Jay-Z leave the Roc-A-Fella label and Def Jam. Because of this, all the artists had to find new label homes.
The time since then saw Freeway reunite with Jay-Z, as he was integral in the Made in America festivals. However, his health soon became very challenging for him. At the end of 2018, it was said that Freeway needed a new kidney, and he poked fun at Soulja Boy’s rant, letting it be known that he got his kidney, giving him 2019’s biggest comeback.
