Danny Glover’s embarrassing award show moment with Rita Moreno is discussed in new book

Fewer actors are held in higher esteem than Danny Glover. With every role he gets, he puts something extra in it. This summer, Danny Glover was very entertaining in Sorry To Bother You, where he played a supporting role to LaKeith Stanfield.

Danny Glover has a deep career that goes way beyond this past summer and even beyond his film debut. The esteemed actor paid his dues and has enjoyed an extended run on top of the game. Even in these recent years, he has shown he still has it.

However, Farrell Hirsch, a popular author, has a new book out, where he explained a moment that many probably thought was staged. In his book, What I Learned From 50 Celebrities, he details having Danny Glover and Rita Moreno present together at the Ovation Awards. What happens next is a classic award show moment.

Read an excerpt from the book below:

Glover and Moreno were each in their own orbits for most of the evening. About 15 minutes before they were to take the stage we offered them a rehearsal space in case they wanted to run through the dialogue a couple of times and maybe work up some chemistry.

Nobody on my team monitored that. I mean, seriously, the director and the producers were busy.

You want me to assign an intern to critique Rita Moreno’s rehearsal? Not gonna happen.

As they stepped on to the stage of the Schubert Theatre there was a very hearty and welldeserved
applause. All that was required of them was to read literally three lines of dialogue, and announce a winner. But then Glover calls an audible, changing the play at the last minute.

“Before we go through all this stuff, I just want to say that it is both an honor and a privilege to be standing on this stage tonight with not just a legend, but one of my personal heroes, Miss Rita Moreeeeno” Pronouncing it with a long “e” sound.

To which she answered, “Moreeeeno is a quarterback. My name is MorAYno,” pronouncing it with a strong Latin flavor.

Dead, uncomfortable silence. You might be able to hear a pin drop, but the pin was way too afraid to drop. And a few seconds go by.

And there’s still silence.

Danny apologizes, profusely and sincerely. I don’t know exactly what happened up there.

But I am 100 percent certain that he did not intend to show her anything but reverence.
