YRS Jerzy’s Wednesday Throwback: Rocko – “Umma Do Me”

Before Rocko became Atlanta’s street A&R, he was one of the biggest phenoms coming out of the A. Dating back to 1999, Rocko was working as a ghostwriter, and developing talent. By 2006, he caught the attention of Jermaine Dupri, who was then working at Def Jam.

It wasn’t long before L.A. Reid signed him, via JD’s So So Def. By early 2008, Rocko dropped his debut single, “Umma Do Me,” which brought the whole Atlanta out. The song came with a ton of energy and dominated the first part of the year.

Rocko has gone onto do major things, behind the scenes, helping several artists get deals. The Atlanta rapper is now best-known for “U.O.E.N.O.,” his 2013 breakout hit. This week, however, focuses on his original single, “Umma Do Me,” which boasts cameos from a then-unknown Future and Masika, The-Dream, Trae Tha Truth, Jermaine Dupri, and the late Shawty Lo.
