Back in 2005, Jay-Z was just settling into his role as Def Jam president and he took a risk. Signing Rihanna, she set the summer on fire, and scored a big hit. However, at the time, Rihanna was a relative newcomer, and Amerie was the big name in pop, at the time.
Rihanna debuted with “Pon de Replay,” during the summer of 2005. It was the lead single from Music of the Sun, her debut album. The song became a chart success and launched one of the most-successful music careers of all-time.
Last night, Rihanna posted a video of herself dancing to her debut single. Many fans took it as Rihanna letting them know she wouldn’t be releasing new music, for a while. So, with that being a possibility, the team decided to make “Pon de Replay” the Wednesday Throwback.
