This new era of music distribution is all about artist ownership. It seems new, but this has actually been going on since the 1990s. Thinking back on Master P’s run, he was doing this, via his record store, before it was even the norm.

Jay-Z’s TIDAL platform is nothing more than a digital version of the old video stores, no different than Netflix, or P’s No Limit record store. All of the artists now want to get in on this. Add Waka Flocka Flame to this list of artists.

Making his name as a mixtape rapper, Waka Flocka Flame has been out of the game, for some years. As he returns, Waka Flocka announced his own mixtape platform, where artists get paid. This led to him and the DatPiff owner getting into quite the Twitter beef.
