HHV On The Rise: BOSS Champs

By Chox-Mak
Hip-HopVibe.com Staff Writer

The recent culture of hip hop, the 2010s, have birthed a new era of “bossism,” if that’s even a word. Everybody is self-made, everybody has their own thing going on. This is something Kareem Burke, one of the co-founders of Roc-A-Fella Records, said was his vision for hip hop.

Because of the changes, in the music industry, and how music is consumed, artists are building fortunes with small fanbases. These fans are loyal, and they stream. So, there are artists selling out shows without any music on the radio.

BOSS Champs is the head of his own BOSS Syndicate and he is making a name for himself. Fresh off the release of Caribbean Casanova, he is now opening up on his processes. He recently did an interview with HHV On The Rise that explains his choices, and his grind.

Read the entire interview below:

Can you tell us about your stage name and what being a “B.O.S.S.” means to you?

My stage name is inspired by bearing the torch for my father, a DJ, of SS Syndicate (Sound System) that passed at age 27 after nicknaming me Champs at birth and my brother (owner) of BOSS of BOSSes (Music Promoter) that passed at age 24. Hence, the company BOSS Syndicate.

Being Original Sparks Success. Beings are being other beings but being the original being you are is most worth being.

You recently dropped your Caribbean Casanova project, can you tell us what inspired this project?

The Caribbean Casanova project was inspired by true events. In September 2015 ,at a red carpet season premiere for music based TV show “Empire,” in Studio City, CA. My then music consultant observed my charm on full display and coined me the Caribbean Casanova. The content was inspired through my experiences of the following year leading up to the release of the project.

Also, you have your “Follow Love” single out. Are you happy with how this song is performing?

I am happy that people are enjoying it, especially live, and working diligently to increase its overall performance.

Given the political unrest, much of it being aimed at the islands, do you intend to use your music as a platform to speak out?

I have certainly used my music as a platform to speak out. I recorded the Take A Knee (FREEstyle) and the video the following day back in October following the widespread moment of NFL players kneeling. The video is on my YouTube channel (youtube.com/bosschampsent) and audio on my Soundcloud (Soundcloud.com/bosschampsent). A YouTuber opposing the Take A Knee movement posted a reaction video with criticisms to my content. And now have reached out to me to live stream an interview regarding it. So I will say its having an impact. Also, the @takeakneechallenge page on Instagram has also been championing the music and the movement. Including offering a $1,000 reward for the most effective content produced supporting the #takeakneechallenge. Furthermore, I will be releasing it as a single via the major music platforms to have a greater impact.

Does coming from the islands, and seeing how people who don’t understand your culture, treat such a beautiful place inspire you to go harder?

I am inspired to go harder in hopes of bridging the gap and providing enlightenment through entertainment.

Having background in acting, how did you enjoy that, in comparison to being an emcee?

I am a story teller by nature. Acting allowed me to tell different stories through different characters. However music allows me the ability to control, create, and distribute as many stories as I like due to the technological advances of our time. There’s great strength and freedom in that independence. As opposed to the dependence often needed in the aforementioned artform.

Where can fans connect with you on social media?

On social media, fans can connect with me via Instagram.com/bosschampsent, Facebook.com/bosschampsent, Youtube.com/bosschampsent, Soundcloud.com/bosschampsent, Twitter.com/bosschampsent, and Snapchat @bosschampsent.
