On The Rise: Co-Star

By Carlos Cureno

It’s funny how hip hop music evolves so much that it goes back to how it was at an earlier point. After years of the solo emcee dominating, a few years ago, crews became all the rage. But, since Rae Sremmurd, duos have become more popular again.

The resurgence of the hip hop duo made what Co-Star is doing that much simpler. Comprised of two emcees from Baltimore and Monrovia, yes Liberia!, they have a viral hit on their hands. Their combined music video for “Bout It” and “Bossin'” has over 80,000 views.

Recently, Co-Star took the time out to speak to Hip-HopVibe.com for the On The Rise segment. During the interview, the duo explained how they came together and the cultural similarities and differences of Baltimore and Monrovia. These two definitely have a bright future.

Read the entire interview below:

In what ways are Baltimore and Monrovia, Liberia alike and different? They are alike in the spirit of the cities. For the amount of struggle that people go through, the souls of people still seem upbeat. But, they’re a lot different, because they’re two different countries and two different cultures.

What inspired the love for music from you two? We both were musically involved in our individual church’s growing up. And also the talent of putting words together in a matter that can connect with people. It just excites us to relate to people in a kind of way that helps people paint a picture of their own story to be better understood.

How did you wind up making this new genre of hip hop? The musical influence in our lives. Being the fact that we love music, as a whole, it didn’t matter what genre. We didn’t want to confine ourselves to one genre. Our culture is urban, but our sound connects to the masses which makes it popular. So that’s where the Urban/Pop genre comes from (for us).

Can you speak about the success of “Bout It” and “Bossin'” ? Very unexpected! Always loved these to records from the day we made them but because they were so different from what music we usually make we just didn’t know what to expect. But because of these records we are now getting book for shows out of our usual market getting more attention and even more loyal fanbase.

Did you two expect the music video to get so many views? Numbers are always so weird to us. You just never know what songs are going to do great numbers and what it took to get those high numbers. But just a testament to the hard work getting more recognition.

Will you please give us some insight on Godspeed, your latest project? Godspeed is our best project yet! Did some good numbers and help us get invited to SXSW 2016. This project is just a bunch of big records and good vibes. Started this whole wave that we on right now. The understanding was to trust God’s plan and just work hard and leave the rest with him.
