This week is an important week in hip hop, as DJ Screw’s life and legacy was celebrated on June 27. Down in Houston, June 27 is an unofficial holiday, DJ Screw Day. Some may believe June 27 was his date of death, or his birthday, those beliefs are not true.

Instead, June 27th is the name of the classic DJ Screw freestyle. In honor of that, Houston’s elite come together every year to celebrate all things DJ Screw and his Screwed Up Click, including Big Hawk. This year, Hip Hop Vibe was a part of the tribute.

Ryan J., a well-known figure in Houston hip hop, teamed up with Samuel Smith and Brian P. Curry, of DigiWorld Magazine, to put together something special for the fans. Together, the #RIPDJScrew mini-documentary is presented tonight, featuring a recap of the annual DJ Screw tribute concert.

In honor of DJ Screw, many Houston artists took the stage to perform. The heavyweight Houston artists who took the stage include, Mike Prince, Stunna Bam, Youngsta, Lil’ O, and Lil’ Flip. Every year, this concert goes down and the original Screwed Up Click members, Lil Keke, Big Pokey, and ESG, were the headliners.
