HHV Exclusive: DJ $B talks growing up in Compton, working with Tyga, and more

DJ $BThis summer, fans got to see a lot more of Tyga via MTV2 with his reality show, “Kingin’ With Tyga.” Here is where the world got to see what life is really like with Tyga and his friends. The best friend out of them all is DJ $B, as often said on the show.

DJ $B is the official DJ for Tyga and has been his best friend over the past ten years. He has been right there with Tyga, as he formed his alliance with Chris Brown, joined Young Money, and topped the charts. It is only right he has his own moment in the spotlight.

In addition to his DJ-ing, DJ $B is an actual artist who dropped a project over the summer. Hip Hop Vibe talked to DJ $B about his rising career as an artist in his own right. We also discussed his Compton upbringing, Straight Outta Compton, and Tyga.

Read the entire interview below:

What was life like for you, growing up in Compton? Compton is like any other urban city across America. It has its ups and downs, but my mother and father kept us involved in many activities sport , and after school programs etc. I grew up in Compton from age one to about eleven and then we moved to Carson then Leimert Park.

Being a native of Compton, what did you think of the NWA movie, Straight Outta Compton? Man, that movie was super dope. I wanted to see it again, but I didn’t want to be the guy telling the whole movie to someone who haven’t seen it (laughs). Ice Cube is one of my favorite artist in the rap game. I’m 29 years young so I caught the end of the NWA movement. The funny thing is, i was around for the Death Row days. We stayed across the street from Suge Knight’s mom in Lynwood true story. I remember seeing Dre and Snoop, Jodeci, Dogg pound. You can say life was good back then. I went to three or four Death Row videos growing up.

Did you and Tyga grow up together, or did you guys become close a little later on? Nah, I didn’t grow up with Tyga. I’m like four years older then him. I met him after high school, like around 2005. Since then, we’ve been homies traveling the world.

This year, Tyga has faced all kinds of hardships in the public eye, have you offered him any advice? Hey! Guess when you’re hot they talk about you, good and bad, it come with the territory. The only advice I can give my brother is keep moving forward, and let him know we not even supposed to be here. So, we already proven then wrong. But this is gods plan. Word up!!!

You’re also doing your own thing with the music, can you tell us about your single, “Most of the Time?” Yeah, so I’ve been DJ-ing seriously for about five years. The first three years, I was just pressing play on iTunes, or better yet, i started on a iPod (laughs). You can say I came along way. #MostOfTheTime is a anthem to me and getting a good amount of plays on my SoundCloud. I had the beat for two days and then knocked the record out in two days. I hope it gets that big look. It’s just a feel good record you can vibe to. In the club or just in the ride or at a kick back and my girl like it (laughs). So yeah check my new record out #MostOfTheTime thanks!!

When should fans expect the full project? I dropped my first rap project, #OnGodEP on July 1, 2015 which was actually my birthday. You can get that on iTunes right now, or see me in the streets of LA, or at a show and get a hard copy for free. Since then, I’ve dropped five songs on my SoundCloud. I will continue to record and see where it goes from there.
