Ten years ago, Mary J. Blige firmly held the Queen of R&B title and she returned in the fall of 2005. That year, she delivered The Breakthrough, which detailed her continued growth. The first single quickly won radio over and the video did the same.
Mary J. Blige thought outside of the box and got Terrence Howard for the “Be Without You” music video. Earlier that year, he starred in Hustle & Flow opposite Taraji P. Henson. Prior to that, Howard spent over a decade in film, doing small movie roles and music videos.
In the end, Howard’s portrayal in Mary J. Blige’s “Be Without You” music video earned him more major marks. A decade later, Howard briefly played opposite of Mary J. Blige on his series, “Empire,” which returns tonight. Celebrating both this and the impending ten year anniversary of The Breakthrough and “Be Without You,” this is the Wednesday Throwback.
