HHV Exclusive: Rob Terrell talks being an executive in the music industry, self-published book, and more

A lot of people have aspirations of being “the man,” the person who is always seen. Nothing wrong with that, in fact more power to all of those who are built for the spotlight. But, there are also those behind the scenes who work hand-in-hand with “the man.”

Originally from The Bronx, New York, Rob Terrell became a key player behind the scenes. Several of the biggest names in hip hop got in the industry behind Rob Terrell’s business savvy. Not only has he done tremendous work in music, Rob Terrell self-published a popular book.

Rob Terrell recently spoke to Rel Tha Don, who interviewed him a few weeks ago for Hip Hop Vibe. During the interview, Rob Terrell discussed his position in the game and his background. There are a lot of nuggets of information Rob Terrell shared that many don’t know about.

Can you tell us how you got your start in the game? I began assisting a producer named Leo “Swift” Morris from Mount Vernon who has credits for working with the likes of A Tribe Called Quest, Queen Latifah and De
La Soul. He produced a project for the group, Trends of Culture, that led to them getting a record deal. After not being compensated for my work on the project, I became more business-minded.

Are you able to tell us about some of your more notable business moves? Aside from being the CEO of Wealth Nation Entertainment, some of my biggest moves include helping Gunplay get signed to Def Jam. Through my role as VP of urban music for IMG Recordings, I brokered a deal for the group, Soul For Real.

Can you discuss your work with Nancy Denise from “Bad Girls’ Club” and your involvement with Mobb Deep? I negotiated the deal for Nancy Denise to join “Bad Girls’ Club” and, as far as Mobb Deep, I helped the artist, Computer sign to their label, Infamous Records, through Havoc.

You also wrote a book called Broke and Famous, can you tell us more about that? Well, Broke and Famous details my experiences in the entertainment business and goes over my achievements. The book sold 11,000 copies, independently.Rob Terrell also self published a book called broke and famous.

What services do you offer? Music licensing and publishing.

What advice do you offer to independent artists? Find a way to create a budget to invest in your own career. Also, make good music.
