As someone who is from there and knows firsthand, it’s not easy to come from Fayetteville, North Carolina and make it out. But, to do it in the rap game is just as close to impossible as humanly possible. Somehow, J. Cole managed to make it look easy.

J. Cole got the Jay Z co-sign in 2008 and was Roc Nation’s first artist. It says a lot that Jay Z would tap J. Cole as his artist and not one of his former Roc-A-Fella artists. Actually, Freeway spoke to Hip Hop Vibe about that time, but J. Cole leads the new era.

Not only is J. Cole Jay Z’s flagship artist, he is the first rapper to have a platinum album with no features in close to three decades. With history on his side, Jay Z had J. Cole do an exclusive concert for listeners of the struggling TIDAL, which Cole is a part owner of, in New York City. Last night, the concert went down and the fans on Twitter have given it rave reviews.
