Quoting the man, himself, “own boss, own your masters… slaves.” It is clear ownership is very important to Jay Z, or he would not have done the things he did. At Roc-A-Fella Records, Jay Z made sure every artist owned the masters to their recordings.

However, there are a few albums in which Jay Z didn’t own the masters for, but he has so many. The albums in question cover his 1999-2000 run, his most-commercial run, by far. Both Vol. 3… The Life and Times of S. Carter and Roc La Familia: The Dynasty were not owned by Jay Z.

Studio engineer, Chauncey Mahan, instead held the masters to these albums. In an effort to keep the masters away from Jay Z, this man hid them in the studio basement. A case was filed in 2014 and Jay Z won this case this past week, according to TMZ, after Mahan took it to court.
