“Empire” series creator, Lee Daniels, is pushing for short second season

Hip hop always had a big impact on the culture and the mainstream always had an affinity for it. There were such breakthroughs as “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” in the early 1990s, thrusting Will Smith into mainstream stardom. The mid-2000s saw Chris Rock do the same.

As good as “Everybody Hates Chris” was, Lee Daniels is the man who helped hip hop be taken seriously on the mainstream level. He has done this with “Empire,” a series he proudly bills as a soap opera. In fact, he says the show is a black version of “Dynasty.”

Recently, Lee Daniels was in Cannes, France, where he was out promoting “Empire,” which is currently being run out there. When questioned about second two, Lee Daniels said FOX wants to bring “Empire” back for a full 22 episodes. Acknowledging the fans who would love that, Lee Daniels said he is pushing for another short season, closer to 12 episodes, saying a long season would drive her (Taraji P. Henson) crazy.
