On The Rise: Jensen Kirk

Jensen KirkBy YRS Jerzy
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

The Los Angeles hip hop scene is full of all kinds of talent, but it is no longer a secret. Ever since 2012, many artists from Los Angeles have broken out and taken over the charts. One artist who hopes to be next on this list is Jensen Kirk, from South Central.

Jensen Kirk has an interesting brand of music, as his inspirations come from various areas. While other music genres are all broad, in inspiration of sound, this is something hip hop is still adjusting to. No question, the transition will be eased with Jensen Kirk’s new music.

In our latest On The Rise interview, Jensen Kirk talked to Hip Hop Vibe about his self-titled album, which is on the way. He would introduce the world to his way of thinking in this interview. Very quickly, readers will learn he is a straight shooter who doesn’t hold back for anyone.

Read the entire interview below:

Coming from Los Angeles, how do you feel about the evolution of the sound of hip hop music from your city? Lyricism, gangsta rap, soul, and the funk is what raised me. I think the evolution of sound in my city is exactly where it needs to be and we want it all!

Growing up, which West Coast artists were your favorites? All of them.

Have you incorporated some elements from your favorites into your own music? Yes, and I will continue to do so. Not just people from the west coast influence me & not just rap music influences me. Politics, Women, Injustice, Spirituality, Death, Life, Food & My mother are elements that I incorporate in my music as well.

Can you tell us about your single, South Central Get The Money? “South Central Get The Money Part 2.” It’s important that we say “Part 2” because I recorded an original rap called “South Central Get The Money” over a Jay Electronica jam he produced for Nas called “Queens Get The Money” It’s my way of paying homage to Nas and also using the record to shed light on the problems in my city and how i see things from my own point of view. It will be a trilogy so there will be a Part 3 and after that it’s done! You know what would be ill though is if I could get some other South Central cats to jam out on the last installment record with me. I’ll keep ya’ll posted on that.

Are you looking forward to the NWA biopic, Straight Outta Compton? No, because I told my cousin to audition for it and he was bullshitting and didn’t go (laughs). But, I mean yeah. I think NWA is a cult figure as a group! They were our first gangster rap rock stars! I think everyone is anticipating this film.

If a film were developed about your life, who would play the role of you? There has been, it’s called “The Glory.” A short film we shot and posted on Vimeo something we’re thinking about re-releasing.

Where can the people find you on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram? @JensenKirk and that’s everywhere.
