The past few weeks, a lot of readers probably noticed a lot of 2004-2005 videos being featured for the Wednesday Throwback. It started with just showing music from the members of “Love & Hip Hop Hollywood,” but this was a good period for hip hop. Among the people with strong music during this period was Mariah Carey.

Jermaine Dupri had recently landed a deal with Def Jam, then led by Jay-Z, and he brokered a deal to bring Mariah Carey and Janet Jackson to the label. This led to him working with Mariah Carey on The Emancipation of Mimi. The album featured the breakout single, “We Belong Together,” but this was the pre-Nick Cannon era.

“We Belong Together” was released during the spring of 2005 and went onto become one of the biggest hits of the summer. The single topped Billboard throughout the summer of 2005 and is regarded as Mariah Carey’s best single in her catalogue. It’s been nine years since this single was released and it’s this week’s Wednesday Throwback.
