As much as hip hop is about the rappers and the people who make the game circulate, there is also the culture. Clothing and graffiti are also a major part of hip hop and, for generations, 5Pointz has been a graffiti mecca. Queens is one of the most-popular places for hip hop and the birthplace of Def Jam.

Many graffiti artists have come to 5Pointz in Queens for inspiration over the years, as have actual hip hop artists. The place is synonymous with hip hop and very important to the history of the culture. This week, 5Pointz was home to some very shocking news when people awoke to 5Pointz being whited out, literally.

5Pointz was erased because the owner of the building wants to transform it into a luxury apartment building. There will be two glass towers placed where 5Pointz is at and the people are speaking out about the situation. The people who removed the art say they are fans of their work, despite removing it.

Marie Cecile Flageul, the unofficial curator of 5Pointz, spoke out about what has transpired, saying ““We are supposed to be the vandals, but this is the biggest rag and disrespect in the history of graffiti.”
